*PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION STRIKE
July 19: The major unions have called for a national strike of public transportation on July 19. Hours will vary from city to city with guaranteed service in the morning and evening. Exact hours for Rome will be posted when available.
*ALITALIA FLIGHT ATTENDANTS STRIKE
July 20: A national strike of flight attendants for Alitalia has been announced for July 20. The strike will be from noon to 4pm and the major unions are participating.
*ROME FLIGHT CONTROLLERS STRIKE
July 21: Flight controllers will be on strike in Rome from noon to 4pm.
***Festa de'Noantri--Catholic festival celebrating the prophet Elijah's supposed vision of the future mother of God. The festival begins as monks take a statue of the Vergine del Carmine, and parade it through the streets in a solemn procession led by 30 monks of the Ss Sacramento and Santa Maria della Croce orders. The locals are less solemn, marking the festival with singing, dancing, food, and music.

***Photography Exhibition: Henri Cartier-Bresson--Don't miss the famous photographer's exhibit showing many photos of The Eternal City, as well as a collection of portraits.

***The Cinema Isle--Rome's film festival is ongoing this week on Tiberina Island, featuring everything from independent films to Hollywood blockbusters, retrospectives, music, dance, fashion shows, multimedia artists, food and wine tastings, and special appearances from all sorts of industry people.
WHEN: 7 June - 3 September 2006. 6pm-3am
WHERE: Tiberina Island--reach the island on foot via the following three bridges: ponte Fabricio, ponte Cestio and ponte Garibaldi. Alternatively, from Piazza San Bartolomeo all'Isola. The best choices for public transport are the 160 and 780 buses.
***Roma Incontra il Mondo (Rome Meets The World)--Music festival--Rome's annual World Music Festival goes on until August 7. From Jamaica to Poland, India to Nigeria, and all points in between, come and sample various artists from all over the grid, including: Stuart Copeland (of Police fame), the Wailers, Jamaica's Capleton, The Flaming Lips, Buju Banton, and many, many more! The venue is in one of Rome's largest parks and a former hunting lodge. It is a beautiful green area to catch a show, and also an economic option with most daily tix at 6-8 Euros.
WHERE: Villa Ada, On the NE side of Rome, close to the Via Olimpica area. Entrance is from Via Di Ponte Salario. Take bus 86, 92 or 310 from Termini train station.

***Fiesta! Latin American Music Festival--Ongoing--Rome's annual soiree into Latin American music is underway. Featuring: Los Van Van, Ivete Sangalo and Tito Nieves among many others.

***Summer Opera Season at Caracalla has begun!--Annually, Rome's opera house changes venues to the Baths of Caracalla for summer performances with the beautiful ruins as a backdrop. Performances include: La Vestale (The Vestal Virgin), Madame Butterfly, Aida and Turandot. Tickets may be purchased at the Teatro dell'Opera Sundays from 9-1:30pm and Tues-Sat from 9am-5pm or 1 hour before the performance directly at Caracalla.
